Once Is Never Enough

I'm in the midst of a DVD packaging design project, for which I've committed to coming up with two design ideas. I started work yesterday on the first idea, and I really like it. And that's not a good thing.

It's a not a good thing because I'm (really, really) tempted to stop here. Or to not give 100% on the second design, especially since I have a lot of other projects that need attention today.

The temptation to accept one idea is full of not good things:
  • the second (or third, or fourth) ideas may be even better, as they are inspired by the "Greatness" of the first
  • I'll have in the back of my mind, "What ELSE could/should I have explored?"
  • a choice of one (or one great and one not so great) is no choice at all, so the client is shortchanged
  • "good enough" is neither good, nor enough.

So, I'm off to work on the second design. Can't wait to see what I come up with!

What's your response to your great ideas? How do you come up with a better idea than the great idea?
